FreightCenter is proud to be recently certified as a SmartWay Logistics Partner by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in an effort to improve environmental performance and address carbon-risk among carriers within our network.
You may have seen the press release announcing our partnership, or seen the SmartWay logo on our website, but you might not know what being a SmartWay partner means. The SmartWay program was designed by the EPA to help reduce emissions by working with transportation providers to reduce the environmental impact of transporting goods on a large scale.

EPA’s Smartway program assists companies in improving their supply chain sustainability by measuring and recording freight transportation efficiency. Although global trade has an overall positive effect on the world’s economy, there is a strong adverse impact on the environment and public health. All U.S. trends and information point to the speedy growth within the freight industry. Between 1990 and 2013 alone, freight activity took a 50% increase and is expected to nearly double by the year 2040. It;’s predicted that by 2050, global freight transportation emissions will exceed those from passenger vehicles for the first time ever. To combat this, something must be done. These startling trends urge corporations to find opportunities in which they can analyze and streamline their shipping operations so they utilize less fuel overall and generate less pollution too.

To fight against these harmful trends and patterns, EPA developed the SmartWay program which launched in 2004.This voluntary public-private program:

  • provides an all encompassing and notable system for tracking, documenting, and distributing information about fuel usage and freight emissions from across supply chains.
  • aids companies strategies and select more adequate freight carriers, transportation modes, equipment, and operational strategies to improve supply chain sustainability and lower costs from goods movement
  • backs global energy security and balances environmental risk for companies and countries
  • cuts back freight transportation-related emissions by increasing the usage of advanced fuel-saving technologies
  • is backed by major transportation industry associations, environmental groups, local and state governments, international agencies and the corporate community

Within the SmartWay Program, partners will find three core elements:

The SmartWay Transport Partnership

This is when freight shippers, logistics companies (that’s us) and other stakeholders within the business partner with EPA to measure, benchmark and improve their logistical operations so they can begin reducing their environmental footprint.

The SmartWay Brand

Backed by SmartWay technology verification and branding, the EPA has increased availability, adoption and market infiltration of fuel-saving technologies and operational practices for helping companies to utilize less fuel, lower costs and reduce adverse environmental impacts.

SmartWay Global Collaboration

EPA works with a wide range of both national and global organizations to unify sustainability accounting methods in the freight division. SmartWay also provides backing to global policy makers that have a desire to model transportation sustainability programs after the SmartWay program.

As a SmartWay Logistics Partner, FreightCenter has made a commitment to assess the carbon footprint of our current carrier base. This is done by recording the total tonnage miles of all our SmartWay and non-SmartWay carriers and reporting this performance data to the EPA. This reporting allows FreightCenter to benchmark efficiency performance and compare those results with our peers, year over year.

In 2015, 65% of the transportation of freight shipping organized by FreightCenter was moved by one of our 42 SmartWay-certified carriers. FreightCenter relies on its partner carriers to help reduce carbon emissions; therefore, the company’s goal this year is to promote the SmartWay program to carriers within our network who are not certified by explaining the importance of better transportation practices and reducing carbon emissions and fuel consumption.

As a veteran-owned business, FreightCenter is only one of three logistics providers of its kind in Florida that are SmartWay certified. Becoming a SmartWay Partner gives FreightCenter the competitive advantage with its clients because it demonstrates commitment in prioritizing sustainability, improving operational efficiency and displaying continuous improvements in environmental factors. FreightCenter promises to continue making efforts towards diminishing their fuel usage and lessening emissions. As a corporate entity, it is the responsibility of us to take matters into our own hands to ensure a green future is possible.

FreightCenter is seeking carriers that want to become SmartWay certified in improving transportation practices who are willing to work together to promote the SmartWay program. For more information on FreightCenter’s carriers, please visit us online.
