Three cheers to 77 years! Yep, you heard that right. This upcoming year will be the 77th anniversary for Daytona Beach Bike Week. Every year, 5000,000 people flock to Daytona Beach, Florida to attend this 10-day long event of bikers, sunshine, and fun! Festivities range anywhere from motorcycle racing, to concerts, parties and even street festivals. Typically held on the first week of March, Daytona Bike Week competes with Sturgis Motorcycle Rally for the title of most popular motorcycle rally in the United States.

What started as the Daytona 200, a race first held on January 24, 1937, quickly became something much more. The first Daytona 200 was a 3.2-mile-long course along the beach and pavement. Ed Kretz, a rider from California driving an Indian motorcycle with an average speed of 73.34 miles per hour. Due to World War II, the yearly race took a hiatus from 1942 to 1947. An unofficial event took place during the off years and was referred to as Bike Week. Once the official race resumed in 1947, it quickly gained attention. The co-founder of NASCAR, “Big Bill” France, promoted the event and the family business now known as International Speedway Corporation still to this day promotes the 200 and all other Bike Week races at Daytona International Speedway.

As an extension of Daytona Bike Week, the Daytona Beach Convention and Visitors Bureau created a second motorcycle festival in October known as Biktoberfest. Since its origin in 1991, this motorcycle festival has been giving Daytona Bike Week a run for its money. Biktoberfest is known for its twelve-mile ride along a scenic route known as the Ormond Scenic Loop and Trail.

What Is There to Do?
