- Military Postal Service (MPS) is provided and funded by armed forces that allow active serving members to send and receive mail. These systems are often subsidized to protect the sender from having to pay more for military mail than normal domestic mail. Often, personnel in a combat zone can even post letters and/or packages to their home country for free. - The U.S. Transportation Command has managed the majority of military cargo around the world since 1987. The Defense Department’s logistics headquarters control the majority of shipments that come in and out of American facilities and war zones. They often choose to work with private companies, as they can provide the level of agility and detailed service that the military requires. These private companies are responsible for shipping items ranging anywhere from army tanks to heavy armor, most of which travels by train or ocean. Although the Navy has its own cargo ships, they reserve them for large operations or emergencies, while letting commercial vessels transport the less urgent shipments.
- Pirates are a prevalent threat to ocean freight. The rate of attacks on mariners by pirates is higher than violent assaults in South Africa, which has the highest level of crime in the world. While the United States Navy is equipped to defend U.S. cargo ships from any piracy, it’s not a bad idea to seriously consider freight insurance for your next transatlantic shipment.
- Although shipping military cargo by rail and sea can be time consuming and expensive – it’s often the only feasible option due to size constraints. In 2012, it cost American commanders in Europe $4 million to move equipment into Europe for just three training events. Surprisingly, rail and sea are still cheaper methods than air freight, which is by far the most expensive (although fastest) option.
